Traveling across continents means discovering some of the most beautiful places on Earth, seeing some of the world’s most famous sights and stepping further out of your comfort zone than you ever have before. While it’s easy to get wrapped up in the magic and adventure of it all, it’s worth remembering that not all travelers have a smooth ride. 

Sickness and food poisoning are the main issues that most travelers worry about and they’re the most common problem that we face on the road. So, how can you keep yourself healthy while traveling?

1. Use Sun Protection

Heatstroke and dehydration can happen extremely quickly. Often we’ve succumbed to this before we’ve even realized that something is wrong.

In order to protect yourself from the sun, you need to have regular breaks and spend time in the shade under cover. You should also wear a high factor sun cream and invest in a good pair of sunglasses that will help protect your eyes from damage. You also need to make sure that you always have plenty of water with you. While abroad, it’s recommended that you drink bottled water, rather than tap water that might not have been purified. Do Your Best to Avoid Food Poisoning

Traveling means getting to experience new foods, tastes and cuisines. You’re literally taking your taste buds around the world with you. Diarrhea, gastroenteritis, vomiting and stomach cramps can be more than enough to ruin your trip. So, exercise caution.

When you’re visiting restaurants or food markets keep a look out for good hygiene practices

  • Does the vendor wear gloves and remove them whilst handling money?
  • Does the vendor wash their hands? 
  • Is the stall/area surrounding it and cooking area clean? ie. No rubbish, wasted food, debris, insects.
  • Is food stored correctly?
  • Always ensure food is piping hot and cooked in front of you

Keep Yourself Fit & in Good Shape

Prevention is better than cure. So, having a good level of health and fitness before you travel will certainly keep your immune system in good working order. It might not stop you from getting sick, but if you’re fit and healthy, you’re more likely to recover quicker. 

Wash Your Hands Frequently

Washing your hands is rule number one in the hygiene handbook. Yet so many of us often forget this simple task.

Washing your hands regularly, especially whilst you’re on the road, will dramatically reduce your chances of getting sick. Using soap and hot water is your best bet. However, hand washing facilities aren’t always up to scratch whilst you’re traveling, so many travelers take a bottle of hand sanitizer with them just in case. This is ideal if you’ve been to the toilet, have been handling money, touching dirty door handles or petting stray dogs!
