Hello from the other sideeeeeeee!
Yes, I’m channeling my inner Adele for today’s blog post.
But seriously, have you ever thought about the differing seasons in the Northern and Southern Hemispheres? I know I never had until I was forced to. I guess I always “knew” that the seasons were opposite, but it just seemed too silly to be true. Christmas in summer? Halloween in spring?
After a full year of living down here in the Southern Hemisphere, you’d think I’d be used to this difference in seasons by now, but you’d be wrong. Growing up in the northern half of the world really did a number on me. In the north, seasons are so much more than just weather patterns. My seasons matched the Hollywood version of how things were “supposed to be.” Powdery white Christmases, crisp cool Halloweens, fresh blooming pastels around Easter, and well, if you’ve ever seen a Made-For-TV movie, you know what I’m talking about.
The reality is that most of my friends and family are still living life up north, in the US and Europe. This means that my Facebook and Instagram feeds are constantly flooded with images reinforcing my previous ideas of the “right seasons at the right times.” Now comes the onslaught of powdery pink cherry blossoms, freshly bronzed skin, short skirts and celebrations of the coming warmth.
All the while, I’m down here… bracing myself for the coming cold…. =|
But, instead of dooming myself to the incoming seasonal depression of not-so-summer-winter blues, I’ve decided to look on the bright side of fall and highlight some of my favorite autumn memories of Chile thus far!
Fall down here in Chile may not be associated with football, pumpkin spice lattes, hayrides, and Halloween, but hey, it’s still sweater weather! And, I have to admit, it’s really not so bad.
So, this week, to invade all your happy springy thoughts, I’m going to give you a little look at what May looks like on this side of the world.

I could imagine how different it must be to have your seasons do a complete 360 on you! Although in Germany, I sometimes still think we’re in Winter while everyone else is posting pastel pink cherry blossom pictures! #WanderfulWednesday
I can imagine that it takes a while to warm up in Germany! Still summer is just around the corner 😀
I know it seems so crazy to be enjoying fall there, but it looks beautiful!! I felt that way when I lived in Australia, it’s funny how unnatural it feels.

Yeah I can imagine! Still, it rarely snows in Athens so I never had white Christmas or snow at all during wintertime! #wanderlustwednesday
I have to admit, a truly white Christmas was pretty rare where I’m from, but there was always a few snow storms a winter! 😛
It really is so weird to think about how different the seasons are in other parts of the world! I remember doing a double take when I was reading a book by an Australian author because she was talking about how cool it was during Easter because of the fall. I hope that you’re enjoying your fall down south and get to visit more wineries too! I swear that’s one of the most beautiful sites I’ve ever seen, the vines with all of their leaves changing colors!
I hope I can convince my friends to get to a winery soon!! I can’t wait to see those colors again 😀
I love Autumn, the crisp leaves, the slight chill in the air – time to light the log burner! Beautiful pictures of the vineyards. We haven’t had snow where I am in the UK for 5 years – I miss it and the kids can’t remember what it’s like! Enjoy the Santiago Fall. #WanderfulWednesday

Growing up in Australia we’re acutely aware of the differences between the Northern and Southern Hemispheres. Watching Christmas cartoons of snow and cold during a stinking hot Summer. Seeing our European family/friends posting beach photos in July. #WanderfulWednesday
I can’t even imagine what it’s like the other way around! All while growing up, its like the media and Hollywood stories were telling you that your seasons were “wrong.” How weird ….
Huh. I knew about Australia having the tposy tuvey seasons of course, but stupidly I handn;t considered that South America would too. But of course! There you go, something new every day.

This whole itinerary will be 6 weeks. Suggest away!!!
Hey Lauren!!! I just read your Seasons backwards poat and it’s so funny, cause, as you know, I grew up there and was totally shocked to only having one week off from school after getting all the Christmas presents!!!!! In Chile, you’d have 3 months of summer vacation from mid December on!!! A much better situation, if you ask me! Hee hee…I love the Seasons anyway, so I love watching all the changes and transitions here too!!!

I have never spend a considerable amount of time on the southern hemisphere so I cannot relate with your feeling. What I can tell you is that I grew up in tropical weather where there is not a lot of difference between seasons. So it all holidays were spent on hot weather! #wanderfulwednesday
I spent a few holidays in hot weather as a kid, but it always felt so weird! I guess deep down I’m a white Christmas gal 😛

I am now 15 years in the southern hemisphere, and it feels normal to me to have winter in July. I came from California, so warmer Decembers were already normal.

And great idea to do this post, it’s so easy for us over here to promote the ‘traditional’ seasons for festivities, fashions, having the long summer break in July/August… So it’s good to just sit back for a moment and think about how that’s not the same for the other half of the world! While I love that it’s finally spring here because I despise the cold 😉 your post has also made me yearn for those gorgeous autumn colours, for wearing boots with pretty jackets, for the warming foods… Of course autumn looks spectacular in Chile with those orange leaves of the vineyards! Must be a great time for hiking now:)
Yesss it definitely is a great time for hiking! I need to get back out soon and take in some of these colors and enjoy the sun before it’s too cold!
Wow, I love the changing leaves of the grape vines! So pretty. Hehe I still find it weird to have Christmas in summer, but what am I talking about. I’ve been in Southeast Asia for the past 3 Christmases and have had hot, sweaty ones :’D. I must admit I kind of like endless summer.
I can’t say that I hate Christmas in summer, just still feels pretty weird! It’s also hard to be in down here in winter while all my friends and family are living up life at the beach in summer. Makes the winter months feel much longer! An endless summer though, that I could probably handle 😀
Fall in Chile looks beautiful!! And I know exactly what you mean about the adjustment! I’ve lived in Tromso for 3 years and the endless summers and dark winters still mess up my rythm! I find the summers especially tricky when you just work until Midnight and think it’s only 9 because it’s still bright outside 😀
Hahaha ahh I can’t even imagine! Here now it’s been getting dark so early that I hardly have any motivation to do anything! Seasonal depression is SO real!

Well isn’t Chile just beautiful regardless of season?! I have to say I’m right with you in adjusting to back to front seasons. It’s my birthday this month and I can’t get used to the idea of an autumn birthday. So weird! Although to be honest the weather here will most likely be nicer than spring in the UK so I’m not complaining. It’s also funny to see my little niece and nephew try to wrap their heads around why it’s not cold at Christmas here (or, more pressingly, why it’s NOT Christmas when it gets cold here!)
Hahah the best are the little kids! Especially when they grow up in a cold Christmas, they just assume that every Christmas is white and full of winter wonderland magic. I hope you enjoy the good weather for your birthday! 😀

I actually posted on Marcella’s blog today that I would love to get below the equator and experience the flipped seasons. It’s something that’s really difficult for me to imagine because it IS so different. Like, theoretically, I can comprehend it… but I can’t imagine it, if that makes sense. The pictures of the foliage in Chile look AMAZING, too… so there’s also that driving my wanderlust.
