Make your home look lived in.

Make your house look lived in before you go— leave some toys on the floor, some magazines ruffled and open on the coffee table. Advertise your “security measures.”
You might not have the latest CCTV equipment or security system installed but that doesn’t mean you can’t advertise and act like you do. Putting up signs showing that a potential thief is being watched and monitored could be enough to put them off. You could even put up a “Beware of Dog” sign if you wanted! Let your neighbors know you’ll be out of town.
If you have a good relationship with your neighbors, then let them know you’re heading out of town for a while. You could give them access to your property if you want, but sometimes it’s just as comforting to know that someone is keeping an eye on your home.
They could pull in your trash cans, help with a little gardening or again, park their car in front of your house so things look normal. (Just make sure you offer to return the favor!) What’s more, if anything looks odd or suspicious they can get in touch with you, your family or the police.
