There are SO many shoes out there these days, it’s hard to even know where to start. Looking for the perfect walking shoe for traveling, while packing light, and only bringing along a pair or two can make things even more overwhelming!
I’ve gone through a lot of trial and error in the shoe department, and with experience, I’ve learned that when it comes to traveling, comfort trumps style any day! Personally, I prefer to keep things simple and buy versatile shoes in neutral colors that go with a variety of outfits.

As someone with wide, flat feet, it’s hard for me to find comfortable walking shoes that last. I’ve come to love Asics, Vans, Superga, and Birkenstock sandals.
Here are some tips for finding the right travel shoe for you:
Don’t be afraid to ask questions.
Most good shoe stores employ people who are knowledgeable in this field, and who should be able to help answer any and all questions you might have. But before you hit the stores, you might benefit from gathering as much information as possible upfront.
Check online for reviews and ask others who travel often what types of shoes and brands they prefer. You’ll want to know how long the shoes take to break in, how durable they are, and also details such as if they’re waterproof.
Get some support (literally.)
When traveling, you’ll want to make sure you have adequate support for your feet to avoid aches and pains later on from your feet to your back. Decent walking shoes with adequate cushioning around your feet and the arches should be enough to prevent this from happening.
The kind of shoe you choose should also be sturdy enough to support your heels and ankles over a long period of time spent on your feet.
Not all shoes are made the same, and some are built to last longer than others. You definitely don’t want to skimp on price when buying good walking shoes, but you also won’t have to spend a fortune. If you shop on the off-season, shop at outlets and warehouses like DSW, or buy after holidays, you could pick up a good deal on anything from Nike sales to other name brands.

What to look for in walking shoes.
When it comes to walking shoes, you should look for something with good arch support, something that’s light and well-ventilated, similar to running shoes. Another factor to look at when buying walking shoes is durability.
Even though a pair of shoes might be more expensive, doesn’t necessarily mean that it’s better made. You’ll want to try them on and walk around the store a few times to make sure they’re comfortable and don’t rub or bother you while you walk.
Use these guidelines to help you find the best fit possible:
Different manufacturers often make shoes in sizes that are not consistent across brands, so you’ll want to ask how the shoes run when it comes to size. When you buy walking shoes, make sure that the widest part of the shoe can comfortably accommodate the ball of your foot.
Shoes that fit well should not slide off your heel or slip up and down when you walk. A well-fitting she should comfortably accommodate your heel without rubbing or irritation.
Again, take the time to try on your shoes and walk around the shop before you buy to make sure that you can walk in them comfortably.

And the sneaky one: removable insoles.
Believe it or not, removable insoles are a remarkably significant consideration when you are on the hunt for the perfect pair of travel shoes. The ability to take out the standard-issue insoles, and replace them with orthopedic or memory foam insoles will give you amazing comfort.
You’ll also be able to change them in case the soles wear out to make your shoes last even longer!
