What’s the first thing that pops in your head when you think about a trip to Egypt? If you’re like most people, you’re already visualizing the Great Pyramid of Giza. But if you’re one of those travelers who is always looking for an offbeat experience, Egypt has plenty of surprises in store for you.
Whether you’re on a work trip to Cairo, or stopping over for a day before you head to Luxor or Aswan, the city will delight you with its fair share of historical monuments, museums, and local markets.
Of course, 24 hours in Cairo is significantly less for a city with a vast museum that commands a good one or two days. But if you’re hard-pressed for time, there are plenty of ways to enjoy an unforgettable visit to Egypt’s capital city.
Read on to find out everything you need to know about planning a one-day itinerary in Cairo.
Before Getting Started…
If you’re traveling to Cairo for the first time, there are a few things you should know about the city. To begin with, the weather in Cairo can be pretty unpredictable throughout the day. Irrespective of the time of the year, expect the days to be warm and replete with sunshine.
The days are particularly hot and sunny during summer (June to August). On the other hand, if you venture outdoors early in the morning, prepare yourself for a slight nip in the air. The temperatures can drop to as low as 9°C in winter. Similarly, the evenings are slightly chilly accompanied by a cool breeze.
**Pro Travel Tip: There are occasional spells of rainfall throughout the year as well. That’s why it is always a good idea to check the weather forecast for the day using a reliable platform, such as Tomorrow.io. Tomorrow’s forecast is accurate and hyperlocal, meaning you can find out whether it’s going to rain in your specific area.
Knowing how the day’s weather is going to turn out will come in handy when you’re planning your itinerary. It’s particularly important when you only have a day to spare in a city as vast as Cairo.
Irrespective of the weather forecast, make sure you carry a light jacket to keep you warm during the early morning and evening. Also, bring a pair of sunglasses and a hat, and slather generous amounts of sunscreen lotion before stepping out.

Best Way to Start Your Day in Cairo
If you want to start your day on a high note, consider visiting the Pyramid complex at the crack of dawn. Of course, it’s only feasible if you’re staying in a hotel overlooking the pyramids in Giza. Also, you’ll need to get special permission from the government authorities.
Find a good tour operator that can make the required arrangements for you. While it might seem like a hassle, it’s going to be worth the effort when you have the Great Pyramid of Giza all to yourself.
If an early morning visit isn’t on the cards, make sure you reach the Pyramid complex as soon as it opens (8 am in winter, 7 am in summer). It’ll save you from the scorching desert sun, as well as the touristy crowds. Make sure you have a hearty breakfast of Ta’amiya (Egyptian falafel) and the local bread with a dash of tahini sauce.
Ditch the camel ride and step inside the Pyramids of Khufu, Khafre, and Mankaure instead. The narrow, dimly lit paths look like they’ve been ripped out of the sets of a Hollywood blockbuster. Once you’re done marveling at the ancient structures, catch a glimpse of the mystifying Sphinx.
If you’re an archaeology enthusiast, you could spend your entire day at the Pyramids. But then you’ll be missing out on all the other attractions Cairo has to offer.

Make Way for the Museum
If you’re lucky, by the time you visit Cairo, the Grand Egyptian Museum would have opened just a stone’s throw away from the Pyramids. Take your time to explore a plethora of relics and artifacts from Ancient Egypt, including King Tut’s golden mask and a statue of Ramasses II.
If the Grand Egyptian Museum isn’t open for visitors, you could still enjoy a rendezvous with the mummies at the National Museum of Egyptian Civilization.

Head to Coptic Cairo
Before the city traffic takes over your travel plan, step out of the museum and head straight to Coptic Cairo, which houses some of the oldest churches in Christian history. As you walk down the winding alley lined with souvenir shops, you’ll get to experience a unique facet of Cairo.
Make sure you visit the Hanging Church and the Church of St. George before heading to downtown Cairo for lunch. While the city is home to plenty of fast food joints and fine dining restaurants, your trip to Cairo would be incomplete without diving into a bowl of lip-smacking koshary.

This local delicacy, made with rice, lentils, pasta, vermicelli, tomato sauce, and red pepper flakes, is best described as a flavor bomb.
Time for Retail Therapy
Spend the afternoon strolling down the narrow lanes of Cairo’s most famous souk, Khan el Khalili. It’s the perfect place to buy dainty souvenirs for your friends and family. Conclude your shopping marathon with a cup of coffee at one of the cafes.

Sunset at the Citadel
Hop into a cab and head straight to the Citadel of Saladin. The mammoth fort is home to awe-inspiring palaces, arches, and the Mosque of Muhammad Ali. But your visit would be incomplete without stopping for pizza and Turkish coffee at a cafe perched atop the Citadel.
And if you’re lucky, you’ll get to witness one of the most iconic sunsets in your lifetime. The view of the sun going down the horizon in the backdrop of the Great Pyramid will remain etched in your memory for eternity.
After cherishing the mesmerizing sunset, spend your evening on the western side of the Nile in Mohandiseen and Doqqi. Sample some delectable seafood, calamari, and cocktails at the local restaurants and visit the Cairo Jazz Club before calling it a night.
Whether you’re a history enthusiast or an avid shopper, Cairo won’t disappoint you. Plan an itinerary that suits your travel preferences. Take your time to savor each location instead of hopping from one tourist attraction to the next.
